Thursday Log
One of the things I love about running, biking, etc. is that I compete with myself. I set a goal and I try like hell to obtain. But why am I not satisfied with myself when I beat my goal? I realized something today while running, I am frustrated with myself because I will probably never be able to say, "that is a new PR for me." Having been mildly successful in high school as a runner of sorts and now being on the prowl again, I will most likely never run a sub 5 minute mile or a sub 6 minute pace for long distances. That is why I am pushing the distance longer and longer; I have never run a competitive race longer than a 10k, so that is the only venue left for me to say, wow that is a new PR.
Anyway, I ran out of time today so I didn't bike at all but I ran twice, once this morning for about ten minutes followed by short but sweet weight training, and then again this afternoon. I ran 4.75 miles in 34.50 which is somewhere around a 7.20 pace. Felt great, tired as can be right now and it's only 8:00 though. Tomorrow I am going to play soccer and then do intervals for the first time in a long time.

I guess there are advantages to being a slacker in high school. Actually, I'm sure I was in much better shape in those days, but we never ran for times in football, except 40 yard sprints, so I can just focus in on where I was when I started running August and where I am today. Plus I can always look at you in awe.
My very first day back in August I took it very easy and ran two 11 minute miles. This morning I did three and a half 8:45 minute miles. That's progress. I dropped twenty seconds off last weeks three and a half miles so I'm happy.
I guess life's just easier in this regard when I’m not as competitive.
That is a tremendous amount of improvement Jason, in a little over two months you have cut more than 2 minutes off your mile time. It has taken me nearly a year to do that. When I started running again around a year ago I was at around 9:15 or so per mile, now I am down around 7:30. Not quite as much but it sure took a long time!
Since it is starting to get colder and less convenient to run I have been doing more indoor treadmill work and in the last 2 weeks have dropped my mile time from 7:45 to 7:20/7:30. I decided yesterday that it is doable to reach new heights and I need to stop whining and push harder, so I am shooting for a sub 5 minute mile and a sub 6 minute long distance (10K or more). For the immediate future, meaning this winter, I want to be sub 7 minutes per mile by the end of this next trimester (March) and I am going to run a 6:30 Mile. Sometime this week I am going to a track to run a baseline mile, wish we lived closer Jason, I could use a friend in the weight room as well.
Working out with you would be great! Based on experience I know if I lifted w/ you'd I'd being making regular progress.
