Saturday 12 miles
My program has me signed up for 11 miles Monday, but my first run all week was Saturday. It’s been a little busy. So this week not only did I miss all my easy runs, but for the first time I missed my speed workout. I warmed up easy and settled into a nice easy pace. When I started I was actually thinking of doing a half marathon distance since I was well rested. In the end I was quite happy to stop at 12 miles. And those last two were a struggle.
Pace – AHR
1. 9:14 – 158
2. 9:26 – 163
3. 9:33 – 164
4. 9:18 – 171
5. 9:22 – 175
6. 9:24 – 174
7. 9:02 – 172
8. 9:03 – 174
9. 9:02 – 177
10. 9:06 – 180
11. 9:44 – 178
12. 9:47 – 181
It was basically an out and back run. I ran out my usual trail, but headed out towards Costco when I’d normally loop back home. When I got to six miles I started back. And I guess because I was happy to be heading home miles seven, eight, and nine were faster than I thought; and quite comfortable to do. Mile ten was actually a bit slower, but for some reason that one killed me. While I was running it I thought I’d really pushed that tenth mile. I came up on someone and tried to reel her in. But when she took a different direction, and I continued on. I guess by miles 11 and 12 I was dehydrated and out of fuel. I pushed and got my heart rate up, but my times were not good. It wasn’t the strong finish I was hoping for.
All it all it was the longest run I’ve ever done, and I did it in under 2 hours so I’m happy. But then I think I was a little careless. I went to a blood drive, and fasted. That wasn’t really using the old thinker. It’s drained me a bit. I drank a lot of water between the run and blood drive and would probably have been okay, but fasting may have been a bit too much.
I don’t know if it’s related, but yesterday afternoon my right ankle started hurting out of the blue. The soreness is on the outside starting below that little ball part and reaching up my leg a bit, but still below my calf. I’ve been trying to eat well since breaking my fast and really hydrating. It’s the strangest injury/soreness. It’s not bad enough to affect my stride walking, but I’m going to get on the treadmill tonight and I’ll have to see how it feels there.

Hey Jason, nice run! Wow, 12 miles. That is insane. I am wanting to do a half-marathon in October though so maybe it isn't all that crazy, or I'm crazy too. Anyway, nicely done. I'm sorry to hear about the soreness in your ankle. I don't know too much about sports injury. Maybe John can shed some light there.
I did get out a couple times this week to run so I am pretty happy. On Monday I ran five miles (8:00, 8:06, 8:21, 8:21, and 8:32) with an 8:16 average. Not too bad, but not great looking at the splits. I have just recently started in on a new diet for my breakfast and lunch and I really don't think I have been getting enough to eat. I tried doing a single serving of granola cereal for breakfast (210 cal.) and for lunch I do a shake (190 cal.) and a granola bar (170 cal.). Then I just drink a lot of water and am starving by the time I get home for dinner. After a couple of miles on that run Monday I just bonked and it was all I could do to keep it close to 8:30. The fun part is that after my run I weighed in at 184.7 which is lower than I have been in quite some time (over a year I think). Talking with Natalie about it last night we figured that I would be better served by two servings of granola for breakfast which is a more normal portion size anyway, sticking with the lunch, and cutting down the portion size a bit on dinner instead. What do you guys think?
Today I got out and tried to break 7 minutes again and failed unfortunately. My first mile warm-up was 10:06, then I booked it and hit the first half in 3:35 followed by another half at 3:27 for a grand total of 7:02. I finished off with a cool-down half at 5:01 followed by a slightly faster loosening up half at 4:10. The good thing about today's run is that it didn't take as much time out of my day which is a huge plus. That's it for now, I may or may not get in another run this week so I'll report more next week.
Mike: two things,
If you really want to do a half marathon you'll give you the advice John gave me. Go to Go to Runners World website and get a program. It’s a great tool to use. You’ll need to do some longer slow runs to build a base.
The amazing thing about the 12 miles is that it didn't kill me or anything.
The second this is about eating. Starving yourself is the worst way to lose weight. We can get on the phone and chat or you can get my take on things by looking back to the early days of the blog when John and I had lengthy discussions.
But congrats on the weight you've lost so far!
. . . and you want most of your calories early in the day not late. Because it's mostly likely you're body needs the fuel early not late.
Thanks for the comments. You are absolutely right about the eating thing. It was basically a short term loss with not much long term effect. Of course, I also haven't had time to get back out and exercise at all in like a week. I guess that's not entirely true because I did get to go luging and cross-country skiing with the Varsity scouts on Saturday and that was a good workout. I did play basketball on Thursday as well for about an hour until I sprained my right ankle for the 26th time. It wasn't bad at all though as attested to by the Saturday activities. Anyway, Jason, I'll give you a call about the eating habits sometime later this week if that's alright. I have a presentation tomorrow that I need to focus on.
