Monday the 12th

On the 12th day of Christmas I got up real early; killer bicep workout, and a tricep workout;
ran two point one miles;
Okay, I'm getting tired of this song thing already, but it works though right? So, I love being done with my workout and showered before the sun is even up, and most people are still in bed. I didn't want to be late for class this morning so I only ran a couple of miles, but my pace was fast, 7:18, and I started feeling sick to my stomach so I quit and took a shower. I like working out in the morning but I don't like running in the morning. Not enough energy after fasting all night, and I can't get enough food in before I run to have the energy because if I do, I feel like I am bloated when I run. One more thing to train my body to do, run with food in my tummy, a must for long distance training.
Slow runner-
Thanks for the new toy, I love it. There is one tiny problem though: Kristi didn't mail the software and I have no way to connect it to my computer, therefore I can't transfer my calendar or contacts because my old PDA is kaput. Do you have an installation disc floating around somewhere? I will pay for you to send it overnight, or second day. Thanks bud.

I forgot to remind Kristi about the CD, and she did't think of it on her own. Here's a link to Toshiba's site.

And here's a link to microsoft for the sync software.

Let me know if you need more software than this.

Running w/ fuel is an important topic. My Saturday run ended at 3 miles because I was just out of energy.
Friday was a hectic day and I only had breakfast and an omlette at about 7:00 pm. Usually I follow my eating schedule religiously. I didn't have my usual shake around 9:00 as I headed off to bed, and I really felt it Saturday morning. I completely bonked!
I never eat before I run. Wake up have a small glass of water and run. Then into the shower and I don't end up eating until usually 20+ minutes later. In my mind it helps me burn fat. I'm conscious I'm using up muscle too, but as long as it's more fat then muscle it works for me for now.
On the other hand I always eat before I lift. I say eat, but it usually a protein shake. I want food there to feed the muscle.
Can't say it's scientific, but it seems to work for me. It basically comes from Body for Life as does most of my diet philosophy. I'd say it's B4L + south beach diet.
This morning I ran my 2.5 miles in 20:20. That gets me down to an 8:08 pace. So close to 8 minutes I can taste it. Then a couple of weeks after that I'll add another quarter mile.

I got one step closer to actually working out today. :) I actually packed a gym bag and took it to campus with me so that I could go run during my lunch break. Then things didn't quite go as planned and the entire lunch thing went kaput. The saddest part about it all is that the test results I have been waiting months for and spent all day working on look like crap! And I skipped running to work on it. Very lame. Tomorrow, tomorrow, I will run, tomorrow, it's only a day away.

Good work mike, tomorrow is a brand new day.

Good work Jason, your nutrition ideas are pretty close to scientific actually. You want to eat something healthy and high in carbs and protein before you work out, and within 30-60 minutes after you workout. Running is no exception though mate, except that you should keep it mostly carbs pre workout, and mostly protein after. I have been trying a light yoplait yogurt with a handful of grapenuts in it for texture, or a couple of pieces of toast with some natural spreadable fruit. I feel great for the weights and then bonk for the run afterwards. So switch the order you say, no way Jose, I am having a blast lifting weights and don't want to switch. Maybe I will bring a granola bar with me tomorrow for pre-run/post-lift. Then after my complete workout is over and I've showered in the communal shower, I usually eat a 300-400 calorie protein bar. This is all done by say 7:30 am. Lunch is not until 12:00, so I eat a bag of carrots and celery, a couple of handfuls of almonds and drink 1 liter of water. Usually by lunch I am pretty hungry. Then I eat my chicken, fruit, and snack for lunch and I am good to go until dinner around 5:30 or 6:00. On days that I eat a protein bar after my workout, I fill less hungry throughout the day. My one and only problem at this point is that I probably eat a little bit more than I should for dinner, and then I also have a hard time avoiding snacks at night, adn they are usually sweet. I know where I need to cut back, it is just hard to do it. I hate going to bed feeling hungry. Jason, do you think a protein shake an hour before bed is a good alternative to snacking? :)

Protein vs. sugar? Let's see? Which is better to go to bed on? If you're going to have too many calories it's better to have them as protein. Protein can't turn into fat, just like carbs can't turn into muscle.
I completely get the logic behind eating before a run, but could the fact I'm not eating before and running short hard (for me anyway) runs be part of the reason I'm dropping fat? My experience tells me that running first thing in the morning I'm burning fuel from the previous day. When I eat poorly like Friday or fast I'm always in bad shape for my run the next day. But when I eat according schedule I've always got enough energy to run at least 30 minutes.
I contend that if you’re trying to cut the fat it’s good to run on an empty stomach then follow up with a good dose of protein 30 minutes later. That’s especially hard or impossible to do if you’re running after lifting. Consequently I run one day and lift the next. Or at least that’s the schedule I’m going to transition to some time soon. We’re almost fully set up to lift. I’ve found a set of dumbbells for $250 (10-40 + rack.)
Don’t think I’ll really get on the schedule before Christmas, but when we get back I want to be fully prepared to jump right into it. It’s time for change I’ve been doing basically the some thing for 15 weeks now.

Slacker – sorry to hear about the test results. Good luck with tomorrow.
