Saturday, I mean Friday's, posting

It just felt like a Saturday today, because I stayed home this morning and went to school in the afternoon, but really just to work out and sign my timecard. Anyway, I worked my shoulders over pretty good and then ran 8.1 miles in exactly 60 minutes. Pace equals 7:24, not bad for my first real long run in a couple of weeks. I started off a little slower and then picked it up after about two and a half miles. Although, I have been reading recently about common mistakes that runners make, and it says that I should try to keep my pace fairly close per mile on distance runs, not 7:40 one mile and then 7:20 the next and say I ran a 7:30 pace. I see the point and will try that this next week to see how it feels. You train your body to be more efficient by sticking close to a pace and gradually changing the pace, I think. We'll see how it goes.

The run I did this morning went like this.

8.27 pace for 0.5 miles
8:20 pace for 0.75 miles
8:13 pace for 0.75 miles
8:00 pace for 0.25 miles
7:30 pace for 0.25 miles
Average pace for 2.5 miles 8:11

Should I be starting out fasting and trying to stay in a tighter range. Because my distances aren't that long I don't really work and finding a maintainable pace and sticking close. I get on and push a little bit more every couple of laps to see how much I can stand.

So after reading what you guys have done today I felt inspired to poke around my settings on blogger to change my display name. I thought the new one would be a little more appropriate considering how much you guys are running. It really does make me want to get out and do some myself though. Good thing you can change your display name, this way if I do start running I can change it again instead of being an eternal slacker.

Mike, you've got a couple of things up on me especially and a little on John. You're younger, and you haven't yet settled into a sedentary life style. You’re still arguably in your mid twenties while I’m well into my mid thirties. I’ll bet if you started running a bit for the next couple of weeks you’d have no problems keeping up with any pace or distance I’d run.

John will be much harder to keep up with. But it sounds like his belly is bigger than mine so I don’t care that much that he can run some much further so much faster.

But if you feel so inclined you should start a regular routine that why when you’re old and sitting at a desk all day like me you won’t get as fat as everyone around you.

Umm, thanks a lot Jason, but you're right so I can't really say a whole bunch. I would say that for your running purposes (to stay fit) that is a great strategy and a good run. For shorter distances I always try to run a negative split, which is exactly the way you did it. Each segment faster than the last and then finishing up strong. I have been reading about training for longer runs and the evidence seems to point towards a more consistent pace being more beneficial.

Anywhoo, slacker, even if you don't do anything from now until Christmas you will be able to keep up with me, we've been running together recently and you did just fine. The three of our paces are close enough that we should have a great time, it's the distances that are varied. But hill are the great equalizer and if we want to do a couple of hill days then I am sure we will all get a fantastic workout. On my once a week long run, we can always break off from our trio or take two cars.

As for the holiday eating, I think I can do well, just watch me after 8:00 at night and stop me from munching on sweets all through out the day.
