Swim and Friday
Swam 800 yards on Thursday night with only a slight rest around 400 yards, practiced my kickturns (almost drowned), and then came home and went to bed.
This morning (Friday) I had a lighter workout in the weight room, arms and shoulders, but only 6 total exercises and lighter weights. I am not as sore from yesterday's swim as I was on Wednesday from Tuesday's swim. That sentence sucked but you get my drift. Anyway, I then ran a 5k on the treadmill with a few hills thrown in, sweet program called a 5k fun run. The freaking machine shut off on my when I was at 4.65 kilometers and running down the homestretch at 10.0 mph. Slammed into the front of the treadmill and let out a mild expletive! I think my time was somewhere around 19:high 40's or low 50's. I was booking man. Pissed. That would put my average pace around 6:52 or so up to that point. If you carry it out using the 10.0 mph that I was running, then it would be around 21 minutes. Pace would have been around 6:46. I was feeling real strong and think that I can push through to around a 6:40 mile within the next two weeks. I need to get to below 6:30 if I am going to finish the 5k in under 20 (my ridiculous goal).

Sorry to say it John, but that made me laugh. I could just picture you blasting along and then wham!, @#$#@!
Congrats on the time anyway. Sounds like you're very prepared. Except for the kickturn drowning thing. How far off is actual event? Are you going to slow down your training a couple of weeks out?
I got home from work at 5 pm last night layed down on the couch and fell asleep. Got up around around 7:00 ate a sandwich and went to bed. The kids where very excited to read me a story as I went to bed. But it was definately confusing them that I was going to bed before they were. Ben, "But dad you're bigger?" And when Kristi told them it was time to leave me alone so I could sleep Aly said, "We'd better go back down stairs, right?" I think she was a little afraid Kristi might be putting them down as well.
I'm going to take it easy today and then tomorrow's Sunday so hopefully I'll be back strong on Monday. I did realise this morning that Kristi hasn't worked out once on the days I've taken off. I guess maybe I am making her workout.
And John this week has really reminded me. If you are getting sick just rest and get over it as quickly as possible. Don't be manly and pretend like you don't need the rest. You do!
I'm glad you got a laugh out of it. I have no idea how the girl next to me managed to be so sweet. She didn't even snicker but just asked me if I was alright, etc. I would have been busting a gut. It was pretty funny, looking back on it of course. I miss being around you and your family, Ben and Aly are growing up so fast. Three years can't come soon enough.
Will you ask your friend if he knows of any good training books for triathlons? I haven't really given much thought yet to when I will cut back before the event. Also, I need to reevaluate my goals and my current training schedule to deemphasize weight-lifting a little. It is just that I really enjoy lifting weights, as we discussed yesterday, so I just don't know. Anyway, I have this tiny thing with nasal congestion now, but other than that I feel great. Amazing what an 8 hour sleep will do for you. Hopefully you will be back at in on Monday morning.
One more thing. On Saturday, when it was 70 degrees and sunny, I ran 8.5 miles, 63:10 minutes, 7:26 pace, ahr 159, mhr 168. Never made it to the gym though, so no legs and definitely no abs. Monday morning instead. You will also be amused to know that it never made it past 40 today and it is raining and thundering, etc. It is supposed to get down to 25 tonight and be cold for the rest of the week. I'll take my one day of spring and will be grateful when the weather warms up for good.
I've got an email off for info about a triathlon book. I'll update you when I hear back. At the very least you should do a google search for info though.
