Return to reality

Hey. What's up? Back in Iowa, had a crappy bike ride at lunch yesterday owing to the 25 mph winds that seemed to be right at me no matter what direction I went. Still, I rode for about 8 miles and around a 1/2 hour. Then I had a great swim last night and stayed up until 1:30 am studying for an exam today. I'll be up at least that late tonight for another exam on THursday and then I have two more next week. Aarrrrgh. Oh, Mike and I ran on Monday morning and we went 5.5 miles in 40:54, ahh 155, mhr 175, pace was 7:26. We can argue about mold all you want bud, just it will have to be at the end of next week wehn I emerge from my exam cocoon.

Running with John on Monday morning was really fun. It is nice to know that I can go fast when pushed by someone else. I tried pushing myself a few weeks back when I ran 6 miles but couldn't get below an 8 minute mile until I kicked the last mile or so. Maybe kick isn't quite the right word, but I gave it all I could and still ended up with a wussy 7:30 mile.

Monday night I got kidnapped into shopping for a new pair of shoes since pretty much all of my other pairs give me blisters. I ended up buying a pair of New Balance running shoes figuring that I would be running a fair amount more with the weather warming up as it is. Right now I am just breaking the shoes in by wearing them around the house, but I am really looking forward to getting out and wearing them on a run next week.

Best of luck with the exams this week John. I'll be thinking about you while trying to get done with my projects as well.

One more note, we accepted a unit over at the Coop we were looking at, but not the unit we had been talking to you (John) about while you were here. The morning I called to accept the crapped out unit I asked if anything else had come available and sure enough that morning there had. So we are getting a very nicely taken care of end-unit right up near the front of the complex (closer to the bus stop for me) whose back yard is a huge open field where Brayden can play. And the real kicker... it has central air installed already. It looks like we will be moving in first thing when we get back from the family vacation and Phil's wedding this summer. That means July 11th if you are still serious about being willing to come help me out with carpets, paint, molding, etc... Jason, if you want to come too we would love to have you. :)

Monday lifted upper body and loved it. Monday night we went to bed early. I was asleep by 9:30 and it felt wonderful; my body was so confused by the whole thing that I woke up at 4:30 Tuesday morning and then rolled over and slept for another hour and a half. So I was certain that I could get a new personal best when I finally did wake up and jumped on the treadmill.

But of course it didn't go that way. I started off with a nice warm up pace and then as I pushed up the speed my body disagreed. My heart rate didn’t get super high, but my body just wasn’t feeling right. I’m thinking I perhaps didn’t get enough to eat Monday night. In the end I cut my run to 2.5 miles at a 7:54 pace. Max heart rate was 189 bpm and average was 168 bpm.

Fortunately this mornings run was a good outside run. It was a bit chilly, I’d guess mid 50’s, but that just kept me cool and I pushed a long at what I think was a 7:45’ish pace for the five miles. You young guys can go faster, but it was good for me.

Good luck as you head into exams and projects. Mike it sounds like you’ve got a nice place to live. I can’t see us making it out to help with fix up, but I’m sure you’ll do better w/o me.

My challenge to you guys is to figure out a way to come camping in Yosemite in September. Dad’s got tons of campsites and we’re going to the top of Half Dome by full moon light to watch the sun rise. We’ll be thinking of you.

Wouldn't that be fun. I don't think it there is any possibility for me owing to part one of national boards being in September, I think. I will check into that one. Mike, it might work for me, I actually start school that week but maybe I could miss the first week, or come up on that friday and be there for friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday? We shall see, but congratulations on getting a decent unit. Hey, I have a question that I forgot to ask you before we left; how is it that you are allowed to make modification to a rental unit? Such as sheet rock, molding, paint, etc.? Who is paying for all of this? Just curious. See new post for exercise summary. :)
