Tuesday
Slept in a little bit today, 5:40, and it felt good. Worked back and abs. I really enjoy lifting heavy weights light reps and dread when it is time to switch back. 4 more weeks. Ran short, due to time and the fact that I am swimming tonight. 1.5 miles, 10:19, 160 ahr, 177 mhr, 6:53 pace. I hope to have a nice long, strong swim tonight and then will rest tomorrow from cardio. WHich means I will get to sleep in until 5:40 again. Ahhhh.

Slacker! Not Mike you; sleeping in like that. I stayed in bed until 6:00 this morning though I was awake for the last 15-20 minutes. Sometimes I hate it when I don't sleep until the alarm goes off and sometimes I like it. This morning I hated it.
Ran my regular 2.75 miles in 21:27 for something like a 7:48 pace. It was my best run in a while. My heart rate did spike up to 190+bpm at the end, but my recovery rates during my cool down were the lowest in a while.
My triathlon friend responded to the email and said he didn't follow a book. Sorry that's not a help.
Started my ninth of a 12 weeks workout program. Now I'm starting to consider my next workout cycle. My math says I've gained about 2.5 pounds of muscle and 1.5 pounds of fat since I started lifting; not bad, not great either.
So I'm trying to decide what I want to focus on next. My first twenty weeks where all about dropping weight. This twelve weeks I've been working on gaining good weight. If I go back to running five/six days a week I should be able to start shaving my times again, and I'm pretty sure I'd drop weight. But I really don't want to loose the muscle I've gained. I've also found a six week bulk up workout that looks interesting, but it's five days of lifting and I would add cardio to the weekends. But running only once a week would really set me back in the running department. Decisions, decisions.
All of that and I'm really wanting to work on swimming soon. They've started to heat the pool so I can start whenever I want. Speaking of swimming what kind of swim suit and goggles are you using?
I going to stop creatine at the end of the week, it's been about two months so I think I'll take a couple of weeks off. I'll being trying to see a difference in my lifting. I've also been looking at other suppliments. What I'm reading says L-Glutamine is as much a proven sustance as creatine. I'm also curious about GABA.
Well there's a long and rambling post.
Jason, I will look into the L-glutamine and GABA debate, though I am pretty sure that it is still hotly debated, I seem to recall that GABA is not worht it and L-glutamine might be worth it. Will shoot off an email to Dr. Weinert tomorrow. Did I ever send you that article on Whey Protein?
Really good job on that run, that is a great time, definitely a strong pace. I would think that you would want to run at least 2-3 days a week, simply to maintain your cardiovascular endurance; highly crucial for any exercising you do, not to mention daily activities and overall health in general. But, maybe your times aren't as important, I mean, neither of us are ever going to win any races, right? I have about 4 weeks left at my current regime and then I am going to reevaluate as well. My plan as of now is to continue the swimming twice a week, add two bike workouts a week and run 3-4 times a week. Weightlifting will probably be 2xs a week, full upper body both times. We shall see.
As for the swimming gear, I just wear really old surfing shorts (the purple ones) and a pair of $7.00 goggles from WalMart and some silicone in the ears to keep the water out. I need to figure out what I am going to do about my wardrobe. I am not going to wear a speedo and be that guy that I have made fun of for my entire life. Oh, I had a great swim tonight, by the way. I did 6 x 100yard sets. My splits were money at 1:41 minutes per 100 yards. Total time of 10:15. Felt great the whole time and pushed hard. Granted I rested for a minute or so between sets, but it helped me to believe I can finish the swim in around 10 minutes.
I sure miss you guys and wish we could workout and hangout together. It is a great blessin to have this website but I sure wish we lived closer already. John out.
Kristi and I were talking about living closer to family. With Tracy and Eddie headed off to Texas we're getting pretty spread out. But if you guys end up in Utah or Northern California I wonder if we'll actually get to see each other much more. We really need to find a place were we can all live.
Moving near mom and dad isn't realistic. It's more expensive than here and besides that I'm not sure it's much of a young family place. The primary and YM/YW organizations are pretty small in the wards up north.
Heaven knows where Mike and Nat will end up. He'll have to see what schools he likes when the time comes. From anything I've heard him say he's got very strong opinions on what exactly he wants to do so I don't know he'll have lots of options about where he wants to go.
Kristi and I have talked about Utah, but not seriously. We really like were we're at right now. We've got good wards, good access to stuff, good job options, safe community, great schools, pretty good weather and all that stuff. But it is kind of pricey these days. In the end I think we could be happy lots of places, but we're very happy were we are now.
We'll have to see what the future brings.
Yeah, I don't know either. Christy and I could go anywhere from Arizona to Washington, though we are truly focusing on Northern California because of the opportunity with Christy's dad and brother. I have talked with Christy about moving to socal and she isn't very excited about that either. We know we won't be going back to the bay area, it is fun to visit, but it just isn't feasible. Too much money, too populated. We want to live somewhere outside of town, and there isn't really an "outside" to San Jose anymore, at least not one that is affordable. I honestly don't see us ending up in Utah either, Nevada is a possibility, near Sparks. Parts of Arizona appeal to me. I guess I am not really interested in Washington and definitely not Oregon, but parts of Idaho are beautiful. In a few semesters for a marketing class we have to gather a myriad of information on three or four states of interest. At that point I will have a better idea of where to go.
An interesting topic indeed on the whole location issue. Natalie and I talk more and more as the winter progresses and the years pass about where we want to move to when I graduate. I think our current list of states to look in are Oregon, California, Idaho, Colorada, Utah, Nevada, and Natalie wants to add Texas but I'm not sold on it. Unfortunately the nature of a Ph.D. and my interests in actually being a teacher and not just a "bring in lots of money and publish tons of papers and we'll give you tenure" kind of guy will definitely limit where I go after I graduate. We'll just have to see I guess. I do enjoy the research, but honestly, being involved in research and continuing after I graduate with what I am doing now will limit me a ton more than if I just go to a smaller school to teach mechanical engineering. Smaller schools like that are everywhere and if that is what I end up going for I think I can pretty much pick the region I want to live in, if the schools are hiring. Eh, we'll see I guess. I definitely enjoy this site and our MyFamily sites as well though, it is so nice to feel connected with the family even though we are so far away.
